轉爐石應用於海洋牧場實例
近年來海藻的消失使得海洋荒漠化成為一個新的環境問題。當荒漠化問題發生時,海洋生物的生存環境同時遭到破壞,也使得沿岸漁業受到嚴重的影響。鐵質的缺乏被發現是海洋荒漠化的重要原因,水壩等水利設施阻擋了河川流經森林區所帶來的鐵質成分,也因此減少了海洋自然的鐵質來源。
由於轉爐石等煉鋼爐石含有高含量的鈣質與鐵質成分,可持續釋出作為海藻的養分,藉此營造優良的海藻生存環境。國外如日韓等國將煉鋼爐石製成多種藻礁、人造石材等,依其功能特性安置於海床上,達成海洋藻床修復功能。隨著海藻旺盛的生長,隨之而來的就是豐富的海洋生物聚集,也因此營造了優良的漁場。
海洋牧場所投放的人工魚礁,註冊商品Triton Reef是由80%轉爐石灌注成形。由於轉爐石含有高含量的鈣質與鐵質成分,可持續釋出作為海藻的養分,藉此營造優良的海藻生存環境。使用Triton魚礁其周遭鐵離子濃度比一般魚礁高,顯示使用轉爐石可以營造藻類生長的環境,但其重金屬溶出方面,轉爐石魚礁與一般魚礁兩者差異變化相當小,且都在低於標準以下。
