Introduction to Slag > Granulated Blast Furnace Slag Cement (GBFS)Characteristics
Slag is a co-product during metallurgical smelting process. Blast furnace slag is produced from iron-making process. In blast furnace ,the mixture composed of iron ore ,coke , lime and a flux will turn into liquid phase when temperature is over 1300 degree Celsius.
When the metallurgical smelting process is complete, the lime in the flux will be chemically combined with other mineral.
The molten liquid is blast furnace slag. Generally, the liquid often cools in two ways in steel mill, water cooling or air cooling.
The cooling condition will greatly affect the applications of slag.
GBFS is a glassy material with latent hydraulicity. It means gbfs could become hydraulic when exposed to high pH value environment or mixed with cement.
In order to obtain suitable reactivity, GBFS should be ground to reach the same fineness as Portland cement. Ground GBFS is a mineral additive widely used in ready-mix concrete or in blended cement. The benefits of adding GGBFS in concrete have been approved in many studies, such as higher gains for late strength, lower hydration heat, and much better resistance to sulfate corrosion.
