The Utilization of BOF Slags in Raw Meal

BOF slag is mainly composed of CaO, Fe2O3, SiO2 and Al2O3 and MgO in minor. These elements are essential for cement production and the mineral phase of BOF is also similar to cement clinker. Local and international studies have shown technically and economically feasibility of using BOF slag as the raw meal for cement production. BOF slag is an alternative option for replacing limestone and iron slag in raw meal. BOF slag can turn into cement completely through kilning process in cement plant. BOF slag has been supplying to cement plant for raw meal production in Japan since 2001. Additionally, BOF slag are mixed in raw meal about 5 percentage in EU and USA as well. BOF slag can save the cost from mining, transportation, and expenses of importing raw materials. Furthermore, BOF slag can contribute significant benefits of carbon reduction since BOF slag is calcinated metal oxide from Basic oxygen Furnace. It can reduce carbon emission by 440 kg CO2 /MT from decomposition of limestone during the kilning process.

The "Manual for the Utilization of BOF Slags in Raw Meal" has been completed by CHC Resources in 2020 to establish the correct utilization method of BOF slags in raw meals. The Industrial Development Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs not only approved this manual but also sent letters to relevant government agencies and major cement plants in Taiwan promoting this manual as a reference. By the end of 2021, we have supplied more than 160,000 tons of BOF slag to cement plants in Taiwan for using as raw meal. It helps cement plants to achieve the goals of reducing natural minerals extraction, reducing carbon emissions, and saving costs. In addition, we achieved Level 4 Optimizing for business model maturity of the BS 8001 circular economy standards in 2021, setting a benchmark for Taiwan's green circular economy and sustainable environment.
